Il pensiero utopico aiuta a interpretare i periodi di transizione, quando il vecchio non è ancora morto e il futuro si manifesta con difficoltà. Nella crisi attuale può infatti fornire strumenti per elaborare realistiche strategie di resistenza al neoliberismo.

A differenza di quanto avveniva appena un secolo fa, oggi non si scrivono più grandi favole utopiche: le ultime, senza dubbio, sono state quelle di H. G. Welles le quali, però, si presentavano più come racconti d’anticipazione che come utopie in senso stretto.

Perché questo declino? Molto probabilmente perché si è consumata l’aspirazione che dava la forza di credere alla virtù delle utopie, quelle che si situavano all’incrocio dell’immaginario e del reale, in questo punto d’incertezza, ma anche di speranza, in cui sembra si prolunghino l’una nell’altra. È come se questa divisione tra immaginario e reale fosse divenuta insormontabile.
