1. Assoggettamento e soggettivazione: decentrare lo sguardo

Porre il problema del soggetto politico significa per noi porre il problema dell’assoggettamento e della soggettivazione. E cioè, spodestare il soggetto dalla sua posizione di fondamento – la posizione che esso mantiene nel discorso «umanista» o liberale – per collocarlo nell’immanenza dei processi che lo producono. Lo Stato e il capitale, nella modernità, sono le due potenze a cui questi processi fanno capo. L’impronta dell’assoggettamento, secondo la lezione di Michel Foucault, accompagna la fabbricazione della soggettività fin da quando una moltitudine riottosa alla disciplina del lavoro viene investita da un insieme di dispositivi di individuazione, per ricavarne soggetti compatibili con l’ordine sociale del capitalismo manifatturiero emergente. Ma questi processi sono accompagnati fin dal principio da pratiche di soggettivazione, che si producono ogniqualvolta la libertà eccede gli schemi pensati per imbrigliarla e obbliga il potere e reinvestirsi altrove, in altre tecnologie o in altri saperi, per recuperare, produttivamente, il controllo su ciò che, sempre di nuovo, gli sfugge. La tensione tra assoggettamento e soggettivazione si inscrive tanto nelle dinamiche e nei concetti politici fondamentali (dalla sovranità alla cittadinanza) quanto nel rapporto di capitale, marxianamente costituito dalla scissione tra forza lavoro e denaro. Criteri essenziali di organizzazione dei rapporti di dominio, quali il genere e la razza, operano su entrambi i terreni per distribuire i soggetti in posizioni asimmetriche. E sono tuttavia essi stessi continuamente rovesciati in basi materiali di processi di soggettivazione.
